About Gísli Jóhann Grétarsson
Gísli Jóhann Grétarsson (b. 1983) is an Icelandic composer and conductor currently based in Bern, Switzerland. His music is defined by a narrative, "adventure-like" style, often using the raw power of nature as a foundation to paint vivid sonic pictures.
With a background that spans both a Bachelor’s degree in Physics and a Master’s in Composition, Gísli approaches music with a rare blend of scientific curiosity and artistic depth. He studied at the Piteå School of Music in Sweden under Professor Jan Sandström, specializing not only in composition but also in choir and orchestral conducting, as well as organ composition.
A Storyteller Through Sound
Gísli has established himself as a versatile creator, with a repertoire ranging from intimate chamber pieces to large-scale ecclesiastical works and operas. He has a particular passion for the operatic form, having composed and produced several works including:
Systemet (2023), premiered in Trondheim and Harpa (Reykjavík).
Plastóperan (2018), a "plastic opera" for Óperudagar.
Team Player (2016), a chamber opera performed in Oslo and Copenhagen.
As a conductor, he has spent over 15 years leading choirs and ensembles across Norway and Iceland, specializing in the performance of newly composed music.
